Public Christmas trees

Brevile BES860XL Barista Machine Express.

So, I liked the Breville from all the reviews but was worried about some of the negativity on the "wet puck" I had read. All the reviews mentioned excellent coffee though, so it was on my short list.

Breville BES860XL, also known as the Barista Express Programmable Expresso. From the looks you can tell this unit has exchanged the hot water dispenser for a bean grinder. This unit is a fully automatic expresso machine with the super automatic feature of grinding a pre-measure of beans for your brew. Note, it is not a super automatic machine as you still need to manually mount the portafilter into the group head, and clean the filter afterwards. This is as automatic as you will want to go if you want to really control your coffee.

But, let me walk you through the pleasure:
1. the box. this has excellent graphics -- even as you open, the getting started guide and pictures guide you along. The unit removes easily.
2. The tamper is magnetically held in place on the front of the machine -- you can use it in place or remove for manual tamping.
3. New: -there is a dry puck feature now for all the fussy reviews -- this removes excess water so you get, a dry puck
- an excellent burr grinder -- you can dismantle this for cleaning, and it has a wide range of control
- for those that previously complained about the "cheat" dual wall filters -- the unit comes with single and double dual wall AND single wall filters
- there is a hideaway storage tray to hold all the small goodies
4. Steaming -- excellent steam temperature and pressure -- works very well with the provided frothing jug, very minimal excess water to start
5. The real test. I am using the dual wall filters, and the Illy whole expresso beans I got from Italy were made into pure heavenly expresso. Nice crema. This is the real thing.



This is one finely engineered machine. From a mechanically inclined electrical engineer to the folks at Breville: you have created an exceptionally functional piece that does the job. Did I mention it is beautiful on the counter as well? I have it on an island, no bad sides.

Drawbacks: none. BUT, when making a real expresso shot, make sure you pre-warm your demitasse. Otherwise the expresso will heat up your cup and your coffee will not be hot. I run a water cycle first into my cup to heat up the group head and the cup.

In my opinion this is the best buy in the market under $1500. At the office, daily I use a super automatic machine that is at that top end.

I made a cursory read-through of the manual and having never owned a machine like this, but certainly having purchased a lot of coffee shop espressos across the globe, I thought I could jump right in and make some great drinks. Well, in part true, but I hit a point where I almost returned it. I started off with the double-wall filter and it made a very decent shot. Then I figured I try out the single wall filter. 2 weeks later and after joining the ranks of Corn-holio, I hit the jackpot.

During the first 2 weeks, I went from a moderate grind and a middle grind amount to the finest setting and about 2/3 away around the grind amount dial. I even far exceeded the recommended tamping pressure. The result was always an under extracted and bitter shot. Most of the time the puck was wet on top and a bit messy to clean up. Each time I pressed the double-shot button, the pressure wouldn't even rise into the darker colored scale. No matter how fine the grind, or how hard I tamped the coffee the result was the same. I thought maybe it was the bean I chose or just a lousy grinder. Nope.

The day before yesterday I decided to read through the manual very carefully and try doing what they say step by step, not just what the cartoon correction diagram showed. I pre-heated the cup by running hot water through the filter and portafilter, thereby warming it. Then I immediately dried the portafilter/single-wall filter and filled it with freshly ground coffee. I added some coffee, pressed it down lightly into the filter with my fingers and added more. Then I tamped it with about 20 pounds of pressure. When finished, the tamper's stainless rim near the bottom was not completely recessed in the portafilter, leaving it filled to within 1/8". After cleaning the rim thoroughly I simply attached the group head and pressed the pre-programmed double shot. Killer espresso - like ones I've had in the finest Italian shops. Cleanup was a dream because the puck was nearly dry - it just popped out. Wow. Cleaning between shots is important - reheating is as well. If you follow these (Breville's) directions you will be more than pleased with this machine. I now feel like I got my $600 worth.

I changed a few things all at once, so I can't necessarily put my finger on exactly what changed the output. Pre-heating and filling the single-wall filter to an after-tamped level near the top seems to be the key. I love this machine now. As with the other reviews, I think the "clean me" light comes on with just a pre-set number of cycles since I too use filtered water and clean incessantly. The machine is heavy, solid and well laid out. Watch out while filling the reservoir so as not to get even a few drops close to the hopper - jamming problems and a difficult clean. I don't like leaving the tamper in the magnetic mount to tamp my coffee, but it's a great place to store it. The wand for frothing is fantastic, but I normally prefer straight espresso. My lovely wife prefers cappuccino and we're now working on some good cup art, no longer worrying about trying to nail the perfect shot. I do recommend this machine, but I highly recommend reading the directions word for word, front to back in the manual and adhering to their advice. Breville designed it and they know how to get the best results. With practice, you too will snub your nose at Starbucks from now on.

It is definitely worth the price I paid for it, especially in comparison to other brands out there,Trudeau makes some of the best mugs.
Here is a brief breakdown of pros and cons for this one:
Pros:
-It keeps coffee hot for a good amount of time, definitely for 2+ hours. It helps if you rinse the mug with hot water before filling it with your coffee.
-It looks very chic and is easy to handle.
-You can drink from pretty much any direction, due to its lid design.
-in its closed position, it's 100% leak proof.
Cons:
-The lid: there is a switch on top to open and close, however, it's hard to see the written words on top to see which position it is in. It would have been so much more helpful to have a color tab, or something more obvious to let me figure out whether it's sealed or not. In the dark, forget about it, can't see a thing. I spilled coffee in my purse, on my car seat etc thinking I had it closed but it wasn't.
-the leather-like wrap around it. It looks great, but makes it impossible to put it in the dishwasher, which is inconvenient for msome people.



This is a real travel mug, the only one I would ever buy again, as soon as I found a place that sold them, I bought the 2 they had on the shelf and came back a week later to by the 3 more they got back in for gifts. I have already given one to a horseback riding friend of mine and she loves it.

The $199 Amazon Kindle Fire has gotten its announcement a little early, and not from Amazon at all. Bloomberg, citing Amazon executives, reports that the Kindle Fire is a 7-inch tablet running Android and functioning as a “souped-up version of the Kindle.” To reach that keen price, Amazon has eschewed the integration of a camera, microphone or 3G, though the Fire will come with WiFi and a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime. Prime membership typically costs $79 per year and grants the benefits of free two-day shipping and access to Amazon’s video-streaming service.

Jeff Bezos has confirmed all of the foregoing at Amazon’s launch event and has added some more specs: the Kindle Fire has a Gorilla Glass-protected, multitouch-capable IPS display, a TI OMAP4 dual-core processor, and at 14.6 ounces (413g), a pretty lightweight frame. The resolution on that screen is 1024 x 600, same as on RIM’s BlackBerry Playbook, and the Kindle Fire’s physical dimensions are 7.5 x 4.7 x 0.45 inches (190 x 120 x 11.5mm). There’s 8GB of built-in storage and the battery’s rated to last for eight hours of continuous reading or 7.5 hours of video playback (with WiFi switched off). A 3.5mm headphone jack is naturally included as is a pair of top-mounted stereo speakers.

On the software front, we’re told that Amazon has “painted over the rough surfaces” of Android with its own, more accessible user interface and has closely tied the device with its content library. That includes the Amazon App Store, which has grown to number over 10,000 applications, and what’s described as a “lightning-fast web browser” running on Amazon’s EC2 cloud computing engine. Calling it Silk, Bezos explains that it splits the workload between the Kindle Fire and Amazon’s cloud, doing some backend hocus pocus to streamline what gets to your device. All other media and content on the Kindle Fire will also be backed up to the cloud, so you can delete things without a care. One final note of software import: the Fire supports Flash!

The islands of Indonesia are all well suited micro-climates for the growth and production of coffee. The many active volcanoes regularly provide ash full of nutrients for the coffee trees. Java coffe Estate is sweet, aromatic and full bodied, not as bold as a Sumatra, not as sweet as a New Guinea, but very smooth. This is the base of the famous "Mocha Java" blend. It is a mild coffee that needs the boost of a mocha or yirgacheffe to bring it to life. If you like a gentle everyday kind of coffee this could be just that. Medium hard bean roast no darker than light French.

Oh, So That's Where the Term "Java" Comes From While Indonesia consists of over 10,000 Pacific Islands only about 6,000 of those are inhabited. Coffee is grown for export on the larger islands of Sumatra, Celebes, and Java. Coffee plantations were also established in East Java, Central Java,West Java and in parts of Sumatra and Sulawesi. Coffee at the time was also grown in East Indonesia- East Timor and Flores.

Both of these islands were originally under Portuguese control and the coffee was also C. arabica, but from different root stocks. The Dutch first brought Arabica coffee trees to these islands in the mid-17th century, known then as the Netherlands Indies. Cultivation proved so successful that "Java" was exported globally and hence "Java" became a synonym for all types of coffee.

Even though Indonesia is a large exporter of high quality coffee, it also exports a large majority of the lesser quality Robusta coffee beans used in the blending of commercial supermarket coffees. Currently, Java's production of the preferred Arabica coffee beans accounts for only 10% of total production. Java's government regulates the export of coffee and forbids Robusta beans to be sold as Java coffee – only premium Arabica beans can bear the Java name. Strictly regulated,the best Java beans are grown on a few government-regulated farms,plantations and estates. These "estate" grown Java coffees are unmatched for aromatic spiciness and rich, smooth, and full-bodied character.

3. Get your Espresso coffee - this has many options; you can buy it already ground from the store (but many times this is not ground enough for good espresso), you can buy whole beans and either grind it at the store (most grocery stores have a grinder in the coffee department) or grind it at home (you can get grinders pretty cheap just make sure it grinds espresso fine). Another option is buying it from Starbucks and they will grind it for you.
4. Brew the coffee per your espresso machines directions.
5. Now here is a nice shortcut, instead of mixing the mocha powder with hot water first I just put my mocha directly into the cup (a "Grande" takes about 2 tablespoons but this will really depend on how much mocha taste you want). Then you can just pour the coffee directly into the cup and mix up the mocha powder.
6. Add your favorite type of Milk.
7. Add your favorite flavoring (optional).
Note: you can buy any of the flavorings from Starbucks (even though it does not list them anywhere they are glad to do it)or amazon.
